I was flicking between stations on my first drive around the Isles, on a November day as my Wife headed for a Job interview, I hit upon Isles FM. It was a refreshing break from mainstream radio. It was a Saturday afternoon show and the host was trawling through Disco hits which were totally at odds with the Hebridean landscape but absolutely perfect for a road trip in some waning Winter sun.

I’d often to dip into the potluck of the station's output on my drives. It soon became a regular setting on the dial - especially great for catching up on local news during the Drivetime show. Each presenter had their own taste in music so the playlist was never the same.

Getting involved in the community in some way was something I was eager to do once we’d fully settled into Island life. With failed careers as both a DJ and Standup Comic, getting involved in this volunteer-run station seemed to be the best fit for some dormant talents.

I first went on air in April hosting Drivetime on a weekly basis. Now that I’ve fully settled in and haven’t broken anything, I now have my own hourly slot every Monday at 6pm. It’s called ‘Night Call’ (Named after a Kavinsky track used on the Drive soundtrack) which has a different theme for the music for each show. I challenge myself to make a playlist around subjects like ‘Mellow Metal’, ‘David Bowie without any David Bowie’, ‘Good Tracks by Bands with Bad Names’. Of course, I couldn't help myself making a big old shiny Poster with massive nods to the 80s feel of the theme song.

I also have a ‘recommends’ spot to air the musical choice of a listener and a spot where I pick out a CD from the extensive random library of wonderful second-hand Emporium that is Bethesda Charity Shop.

It’s really invigorated my music listening. For too long I’d been spoon-fed recommendations by Spotify’s algorithms and this feels like I’m probably unearthing and discovering new gems that no code could have predicted for me. You can listen to the latest show 'Bad Name Good Tune' here.
