The Mentoring Game
I've written previously about my delight in running Workshops at the local arts centre - An Lanntair and how I'm channelling my inner Robin Williams in Dead Poet's Society. Another role I've adopted that makes me feel all 'Oh Captain! My Captain!!', thanks to An Lanntair and The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, is that of a Mentor. I have worked with a couple of students, who are very talented creatives with an interest in Graphic Design. But like most starting out in this dizzying industry, they are a bit lost and need a gentle guide through it all.
In steps this weather-beaten, Graphic Sea Dog to warn them of all the terrible dangers and help them not to get dashed on the creative rocks... It has been really great, watching as they slowly gain confidence and begin to produce work of their own.
I'll post a bit more about the work I'm doing with them, but for now, here's a video, filmed by Ruaraidh Urpeth, that's a great snapshot of the mentoring programme and its importance in fostering talent in the Outer Hebrides. You also get a sneak peek at my new digs overlooking the harbour. Enjoy!
